PDF Expert 3 gains a dark mode on the Mac, bringing it in line with the rest of macOS’s core features. PDF Expert recently received a major update to version 3, bringing with it a new design, OCR support, and new ways to export PDFs. Today, PDF Expert is likely the best option for power PDF users. Lots has changed since then, though - PDF Expert didn’t even make the top of our contenders list. Way, way back, we named PDFpen for Mac the best PDF app for when Preview didn’t fit the bill. At the moment DTTG can not do a quick preview of OmniOutliner files, but on the desktop these files can be viewed in DevonThink and the disclosure triangles opened or closed.Apple’s Preview PDF app does a good job for most PDF uses, offering catch-all support, a nice array of annotation tools, strong searching features, and reasonably good export and resizing features.īut for those who need more PDF features - such as the ability to edit a PDF, to apply OCR, to import or export from/to Word or Excel file formats, or to create a table of contents within the PDF - you’ll have to go looking for something more powerful than Preview. I finally export the OmniOutliner file to DTTG. I then apply my annotations template and create notes, ideas then arrange the text into logical groupings. It simply strips superfluous text such as ‘notes’ and ‘highlights’ and opens an ‘Open in…’ dialogue box where I select OmniOutliner. While I generally prefer to have all my annotations in one file some people prefer to have the annotations split up and an individual file for each quote.

While it is possible to export this directly to DTTG it is not my preferred option as I like to use Markdown. The annotations are exported as an HTML file. However, I have not found an ideal solution for getting annotations into DevonThink and rely upon a series of hacks to export my highlights. With the addition of the Apple Pencil highlighting PDFs got even easier and is now my preferred way of reading articles.
